Cindy Markham Raises the Bar for Women in Trucking
According to the American Trucking Association, the trucking industry saw a 68% increase in the number of female drivers from 2010 to 2018. At the IMC Companies Family of Brands, we are committed to providing all drivers, especially women drivers, a professional and positive working environment.
“I think women definitely have a place in the trucking industry. We need more entrepreneurs. We need people on the ground who understand the industry and can push women to believe in themselves and realize it is not beyond their grasp.” -Cindy Markham, IMCG Company Driver
“I’ve loved driving trucks from an early age when I started working at my grandfather’s blending plant. At the time, truck driving wasn’t an option for women because of the stereotypes in the industry.”
Nevertheless, Cindy overcame those stereotypes. With an aeronautical engineering degree, Cindy worked as an aircraft mechanic for several years before returning to truck driving. “There is still a mindset that women shouldn’t be in the field, but there is also a certain amount of empowerment because of the support we receive. The industry is changing.”
“IMCG encourages women drivers and does the little things that make all the difference in the world. For example, several years ago, they placed a cheater bar in all of their trucks to help open container doors that might be corroded or difficult to open. They also provide clean bathrooms in their facilities. Many other trucking companies don’t. That’s a big issue.”
“Women definitely have a place with this company. They offer flexible hours and good, clean equipment, but most of all, they respect us.”
